For speed enthusiasts, there is nothing else quite like the feeling of strapping into a sports car and letting it cut loose on an open highway or at the track on the weekend. That combination of heart-pounding excitement, precision driving that keeps you in control of every moment, and a refined and sophisticated overall experience at the wheel is beyond anything else out there. Choosing the right sports car to deliver this experience, however, is not always easy, and there are quite a few options designed to provide a drive that will quicken your pulse. Looking at a couple of them at a time, like the 2023 Chevy Camaro vs 2023 Ford Mustang, makes it easier to see what each offers and determine which is perfect for you.

Both the Camaro and the Mustang bring a lot to the road, there is no denying that, but as soon as you really dig into the specifics on them, the Camaro becomes the clear winner. For example, both of these vehicles have numerous engines available. While the Mustang has a more powerful starting engine, it quickly loses ground with what the Camaro has available and cannot hope to match the power of Chevy’s best engine. The top engine choice in the Ford Mustang is a 5.0L V8 in the Mach 1 model that offers 470 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque; by comparison, the incredible Chevy Camaro ZL1 features a 6.2L Supercharged V8 engine that delivers 650 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque. It is not even a contest, honestly.

Beyond these engine options, the Camaro also gives you many more choices for how you want to customize your sports car and truly make it your own. Ford offers six different trims for the Mustang—essentially two choices for features and options to go along with each of its three engines—but there is not much more on offer in terms of special editions or noteworthy packages. For the Camaro, however, Chevy gives you eight different trims, four engines across them, six packages, two special editions, and even more options to choose from. Combine all of that with a number of better standard features in the starting trim, compared to the Mustang, and the Camaro becomes the clear winner across the board.

  • Performance

If you are interested in a sports car, you already know that a powerful engine is the most important thing to look for. Gorgeous style, a luxurious interior, and sophisticated technology are all meaningless if a sports car offers a tepid, uninspired driving experience. Fortunately, the Chevy Camaro and Ford Mustang both have a number of engines available that can provide you with a great time on the road. While the Mustang has a lot to offer, it ultimately falls short—very short—of the kind of raw power that the Camaro can deliver.

    The Mustang's Engine Options

The Mustang has three engines available, starting with a 2.3L EcoBoost Turbo I-4 that delivers 330 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. This standard engine, along with the two that follow, is offered with either a six-speed manual transmission or a 10-speed automatic, so you can choose the kind of driving experience you prefer. There are two versions of an available 5.0L V8 engine, starting with one tuned for the GT models with 450 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque. Choosing a Mach 1 trim boosts performance up to 470 hp, though it retains the 410 lb-ft of torque. Overall, these are solid choices, and the starting engine is excellent, but you will see why Ford’s engineering ultimately falls behind.

    The Camaro's Engine Options

With the Chevy Camaro, you get a standard 2.0L Turbo I-4 engine on the starting trim that provides 275 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. That is, admittedly, less power than the Mustang’s standard engine, but the difference disappears quickly when you look at the Camaro’s available 3.6L V6 engine that offers 335 hp and 284 lb-ft of torque. If you want to match the best that the Mustang can do, an available 6.2L V8 engine delivers 455 hp and 455 lb-ft of torque.
For truly exceptional performance, a 6.2L supercharged V8 engine for the Camaro ZL1 delivers a massive 650 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque, absolutely demolishing the power that the Mustang can offer. All of these engines are available with either a manual or automatic transmission, and the supercharged engine lets the Camaro go from 0 to 60 in just 3.5 seconds—the Mustang simply cannot keep up with that.

  • Options and Special Editions

The auto industry prides itself on offering something for everyone, yet sports cars like these are specialized vehicles designed for a certain kind of driver who really appreciates the power that something like the Chevy Camaro can deliver. When you shop for a sports car, you want to find a powerful engine and great features inside and out, but you also want to be able to make it your own. There is nothing better than having the freedom to customize your new vehicle and get the car you have been dreaming of—the Mustang has some good options, but the Chevy Camaro gives you more to choose from.

    Available Packages on the Mustang

Ford offers six trims for the Mustang; essentially, two trims are available for each engine, creating three sets of standard and Premium models. In addition to this, the trims also have a number of packages available, but many of them are simple, like upgrades to the tech available inside them. The starting EcoBoost Fastback model has some interesting packages like a High Performance Package that adds 19-inch low-gloss Ebony-painted wheels, summer-only tires, and a hood accent stripe. Meanwhile, the Mach 1 Premium model has an exclusive Appearance Package with Fighter Jet Gray exterior paint, an Ebony/Orange interior, and other unique details; fully-developed special editions, however, are missing.

    Available Packages on the Camaro

With the Chevy Camaro, you have many options available to you to customize your sports car exactly how you want it. For starters, there are eight trim levels on offer, giving you tremendous freedom from the very beginning, plus numerous packages beyond that with a lot to offer. For example, the ZL1 1LE Extreme Track Performance Package adds to the amazing ZL1 model with 19-inch low-gloss Black-painted forged aluminum wheels wrapped in Goodyear Eagle Supercar summer-only tires, Brembo six-piston front and four-piston rear Red-painted brake calipers, and a unique front splitter.

Six different packages are available with these kinds of impressive additions, plus you have two different special editions on offer. The Shock and Steel Special Edition features Carbon Flash Metallic exterior details with a stripe with either Shock or Silver accents, while the Redline Edition includes special graphics, with a Jet Black interior and Red details inside and out.

  • Interior

People are shown under a starry sky in a 2023 Chevy Camaro.

Both of these vehicles have a wide range of options to choose from inside, but it is always a good idea to look at their starting features to see what they deliver.

    Standard Camaro Features

The Chevy Camaro 1LS, its starting trim, features a 7.0-inch infotainment display, a six-speaker sound system, and a personalized Driver Information Center. You also get an eight-way power driver’s seat, a four-way manual front-passenger seat, a leather-wrapped flat-bottom steering wheel, and keyless open and start. Cruise control, a leather-wrapped shift knob, and more features round out an interior that is a pleasure to drive in.

    Standard Mustang Features

For the Mustang, however, standard features are a bit less refined. The starting EcoBoost Fastback model comes with an underwhelming 4.3-inch infotainment system, a six-speaker sound system, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Manual climate control is standard, along with a four-way manually-adjustable driver’s seat and two-way manual front-passenger seat. Even looking at available options for the starting trim, there is only a six-way power driver’s seat, falling short of what comes standard in the Camaro’s starting trim.
