What’s New for Chevy in 2020?

Chevy has been America’s all-around car maker for a century. Where other car manufacturers focus on honing a few specific models to perfection, Chevrolet has the most wide-ranging variety of vehicles available in its product line. We all know that Chevy cars aren’t exactly exclusive – similar models are available from the other General Motors lines. But if you’re looking to buy a solid American car at an affordable price, Chevy is where you look. When you search for a “Chevy dealer near me” online, look no further than us at Rick Hendrick Chevrolet of Buford. We are more than thrilled about the 2020 Chevy model year and would love to get you driving one of these amazing vehicles.

Chevy’s 2020 lineup largely consists of tweaks and upgrades to their dependable line of cars, with things like new colorways, new independent rear suspensions, and an eight-speed automatic transmission for certain models and trim levels.

The most exciting thing to come out for the bowtie brand is the long-awaited, long-promised mid-engine Corvette Stingray. But that doesn’t mean that the upgrades for the other 2020 model year Chevys vehicles aren’t worth your interest.

Let’s look at what’s coming down the pike for the new 2020 Chevy models.

2020 Chevy Spark

With kicking new colors that emphasize the zippy nature of this compact car, the Spark is a solid baseline entry into Chevy cars. Other than the very interesting colorway choices (raspberry or passionfruit, anyone?), though, there’s nothing new for the 2020 Chevy Spark: functionally, it’s still the same second-generation Spark introduced in 2015.

That’s not to say the Spark isn’t a good car. It’s hard to beat a great fuel economy of 30 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway, four trim levels that add as many bells and whistles as you want, and a great infotainment system as a base. Like all newer Chevy’s, this infotainment system comes standard with The 2020 Chevy Spark also features Chevy’s OnStar system even at the LS trim level.

Where the Spark does underwhelm is in horsepower and rear seat and cargo space. This is a car for urban environments, and it shows. It’s 1.4-liter 4-cylinder engine just isn’t capable of much… 98 horsepower and 94 pounds of torque.

2020 Chevy Sonic

If you were a fan of the Sonic’s 6-speed manual transmission, then we have bad news for you. It’s being discontinued for the model year 2020, at least in the LT trim level.

Other than that, the 2020 Chevrolet Sonic, like its little brother the Spark, isn’t getting much else in the way of an update for the model year 2020. It still has a built-in 4G LTE hotspot, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity as standard, and generally has a nice tech package even at a base trim level. It also has a turbocharged 1.4L Ecotec engine that gives this zippy little car 138 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. And the 26 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway isn’t too shabby, either.

The Sonic comes as both a sedan and hatchback, so you can customize to your heart’s content.

2020 Chevy Bolt EV

The Chevy Bolt EV hasn’t had much of an upgrade from the 2019 version or even the 2017 model year when it was introduced. However, the 2020 Bolt EV has new high-definition cameras, including new surround-view HD parking cameras, and a shortcut button on the infotainment screen to allow you to access them fast. The biggest change to the 2020 Bolt EV is that it holds the top range in its segment at an estimated 259 miles. The range boost (up 21 miles from the 2019 model year’s range) comes from a readjusted battery pack. The new battery composition is supposed to result in a slightly faster charge rate, but there isn’t a matching update to the charging equipment itself.

The 2020 Bolt EV will also be getting a slight cosmetic upgrade in the form of two additional colors, a new design for the front grille, and an extra speaker for the low-speed warning sound to let nearby people know when the car is in gear.

2020 Corvette Stingray

The Corvette Stingray is unlike anything else you’ll see on the road. While the Corvette has been around since the 1950s, the mid-engine Stingray is the most significant development for the brand in decades.

Yes, we did say “mid-engine.” The Stingray’s 6.2-liter V8 engine isn’t under the hood. It’s in the back, under glass.
In a list of “what’s new for 2020?”, the Corvette Stingray is all new. And we mean everything. The 2020 Chevy Corvette has been completely redesigned now that the pesky front engine isn’t an issue. The look of the 2020 Corvette Stingray is unlike anything else on the road. It’s speed in steel form.

The mid-engine design of this 6.2-liter V8 speed demon puts the passenger compartment a lot closer to the front wheels (16.5 inches, to be precise), which gives the driver a better feeling of control. This baby packs 495 horsepower under its sleek hood and a whopping 470 lb-ft of torque. Speaking of control, the steering wheel is squared off to mimic the steering wheel design in other high-performance cars. A programmable front suspension helps keep the nose of this beauty from being scraped on the sidewalk when you’re turning in to a parking lot.

The mid-engine design does have one negative cargo space. The 2020 Stingray has two spots to store luggage and combined this adds up to 13 cu.ft. of space.

The Stingray does have a removable Targa roof panel, but if that’s not enough for you, it does come in a convertible option. The Stingray convertible has a small glass rear window that’s height adjustable. You know, in case you need even more customization.

2020 Chevy Camaro LS &LT

Since the 2019 refresh of the Chevy Camaro, with its menacing open grille and oddly placed flow tie, met with some disapproval from fans, the 2020 Camaro has been given yet another facelift. The 2020 Chevy Camaro now sports a body-color bar between the upper and lower grilles. The front look is still the kind of car that makes you nervous when it comes up behind you on the freeway.

The 2020 Camaro is a muscle car that backs up it’s aerodynamic styling with a 455-horsepower LT1 engine, four powertrain options that range from responsive to NASA-launch levels of power, and an ergonomically designed interior that makes driving this four-wheeled rocket a pleasure.

Speaking of driving, driving the updated 2020 Camaro is an exercise in pure joy, with comfy Recaro seats, HD backup cameras that take care of that classic sports car problem – the tiny rear windshield, and excellent fuel economy for its class. The 2020 Camaro is the kind of sports car that works as well in the real world as it does on the track.

2020 Chevy Malibu

The 2020 Chevy Malibu has not been updated much since 2019, when it debuted new front and rear styling, an upgraded infotainment system, and a new transmission for the turbo 1.5-liter engine. 2019 also saw the Malibu Hybrid as an option, but that’s been discontinued as of 2020.

The Chevy Malibu is a midsize sedan that’s reliable, and with its five trim levels, it’s also pretty customizable. Base models will get you 160 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque from the standard 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, and the Premier model upgrade gets you a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine paired with a nine-speed transmission that gets up to 250 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque.

2020 Chevy Colorado

A silver 2020 Chevy Colorado Redline Edition is parked in a dark garage.

The new 2020 Chevy Colorado is Chevy’s midsize truck, and for its size, it delivers a lot of the power of its older brothers in the Silverado line. It’s hard to beat the Colorado’s combination of hefty towing and maneuverability unless, of course, you need to haul elephants around, in which case you’d want the Silverado.

The 2020 Colorado has a few new touches to make your work truck really work for you. It boasts a new remote-locking tailgate and a Tire Fill alert so that you don’t have to kneel in the dirt to check tire pressure when you’re trying to haul a load or a trailer.
The highly customizable Chevy Colorado comes in five trims, including including the base, WT, LT, ZR1, and ZR2. You can look forward to a fuel economy of 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway for the 3.6-liter V6 engine.

2020 Chevy Silverado 1500

The 2020 Chevy Silverado is the result of years of truck knowhow. And for the current model year, it’s got some new bells and whistles to go on top of its standard, dependable features.

The 2020 Silverado 1500 now has an adaptive cruise control system to make your driving life easier. The touchscreen display has been updated for ease of use. There’s been a slight colorway change, with the addition of the Cajun Red Tintcoat and the loss of the Oakwood Metallic colorway.

What else is new in 2020 for the Silverado 1500? How about an option for a 3.0-liter Duramax turbodiesel with 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque? The Silverado doesn’t need to do much to maintain its position as king of towing heavy things.

2020 Chevy Silverado 2500HD & 3500HD

If you thought the Silverado 1500 was impressive (and it is), you’ll flip over the Silverado HD. It takes the heavyweight crown very seriously, with an increase of 52% towing capacity versus the 2019 Silverado. The 2020 Silverado HD also has the class-leading towing technologies that the 1500 does; those 15 available camera views will come in handy when you’re hauling up to 35,500 pounds of… well, whatever you want to haul.

The 2020 Silverado HD doesn’t just haul big, it looks big. It’s longer, wider, and taller than previous years. This hulk of a truck lets you choose a new, standard 6.6-liter V8 direct-injection gas engine to power all your pulling. It tops out at 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque. In case you’re comparing from last year’s model, that’s an 11% increase for the horses and a 22% increase in torque.

The 2020 Silverado HD matches that Duramax 6.6L V8 engine with an all-new Allison 10-speed automatic transmission for maximum oomph. It carries a heavier-duty frame as compared to the Silverado 1500 and has an upgraded driveline to boot. Even the fan is bigger.

2020 Chevy Suburban

The big brother of the Chevy line, the Chevy Suburban, is pretty much a personal troop transport. That tows up to 8,000 pounds. With leather seating and acoustic-laminated windshield and triple-sealed doors. In other words, it’s large, quiet, and powerful, just like it has been for the past 80 years.

The 2020 Chevy Suburban, unlike its slightly smaller brother, the Tahoe, is getting something of an update for the model year 2020. It’s getting a performance package that includes a 6.2-liter V8 (an upgrade from the 5.3-liter in the 2019 Suburban) on the Premier package and extra technology features. There’s also the slight color change, as Suburban loses the Pepperdust Metallic and gains the Black Cherry Metallic colorway.

2020 Chevy Tahoe

If Chevy has a Swiss Army knife in its vehicle lineup, it’s the Tahoe. This handsomely styled full-size SUV can carry seven to nine passengers and haul about 8,000 pounds. It’s a workhorse of a truck with a standard 355 horsepower 5.3-liter V8, although you can opt for a 420 horsepower 6.2-liter V8 engine instead.

There’s nothing really new to report for the 2020 model year, though, besides a swap of available colors. Pepperdust Metallic has been replaced by the elegant Black Cherry.

Other than that, the 2020 Chevy Tahoe is still the same fourth-generation SUV from back in 2015, with a really nice interior. When you look at the highway fuel economy and wince at the estimated 23 mpg, just remember that the Chevy Tahoe is a behemoth of a full-sized SUV with a thirsty V8 powering all that bulk. The Tahoe won Highest Ranked Large SUV in Initial Quality based on 2019 vehicles from JD Power & Associates, so it’s definitely worth heading over to your local Chevy dealership to check it out.

The 2020 model year is going to be an exciting one for Chevrolet. The brand that’s stood for a hundred years is still going strong, with the most comprehensive auto offerings around at price points that won’t break you.
