Six Healthy Road Trip Snacks for the Holidays

November 23rd, 2017 by

As you prepare to hit the road for that highly-anticipated road trip, you want to be sure everything is covered so nothing will put a damper on the experience. Your checklist: the right car, the right music, the right activities, and most definitely the right snacks. Good food is a must for any road trip but can be a challenge for healthy eaters. There’s no need for your healthy diet to go off kilter while on the road; here are six exciting healthy snack options for your road trip.

Popcorn

Popcorn is fun even on a road trip, but don’t just settle for the pre-bagged, microwave stuff. Pre-packaged popcorn is coated with chemicals placing it on the avoid list for healthy eaters. Opt for naked kernels that can be popped on your stovetop, and you’ll have yourself delicious popcorn to provide you with a good supply of digestion-supporting fiber, complex carbs for energy, and the all-important antioxidants.

Mozzarella String Cheese and Apple Slices

Satisfying protein, some complex carbohydrates, and a small amount of healthy fat is a must-have for any road trip. This tasty combo snack offers all three and is a great choice for alleviating hunger and keeping your energy level in check. Throw these snacks in a cooler or lunch bag to keep them fresh.

Hard-Boiled Eggs and Whole-Wheat Crackers

Hard-boiled eggs are another great healthy option for hunger-satisfying protein. Whole-wheat crackers provide complex carbs, and you have yourself a winning healthy snack combo to keep your energy going and your stomach filled.

Grapes or Carrot Sticks

If there’s one activity that will make you break your eating schedule, it’s a road trip. It’s certainly fun to munch and converse, rock away to some good music, or revel in a little intermittent silence as the miles and scenery zip by. Munching helps to break the boredom and keep your energy level up, but it’s important to munch healthily.

Grapes and carrot sticks are definitely top vegetable/fruit choices. The crunching of the carrot sticks could even play a dual role by helping to keep you awake. The grapes add a bit of fluid to quench your thirst without filling you up for a bathroom stop.

Greek Yogurt With Nuts or Fruits

Yummy! Delicious! Satisfying! Healthy! Greek yogurt is a protein powerhouse that will satisfy your hunger while the added nuts or fruits will supply you with energy, fiber, and wonderful nutrients. The combo will top you off and keep you going until you need to refuel again.

Drinks

Driving causes dehydration, so it’s important to hydrate constantly. Sluggishness can be a sign of dehydration, and sometimes we do mistake the effects of dehydration for hunger. Water and coconut water are the top hydration fluids, but no one can fault you for knocking back some coffee. Drink coffee and tea in moderation, as too much caffeine in your system can cause dehydration, and you’ll end up needing more frequent bathroom stops.

Bring these healthy snacks with you on a long road trip to stay alert and stick to your diet.
