MultiPro Tailgate: Soon to Join the Silverado?

As of right now, the appropriately named MultiPro tailgate only comes with GMC products. The GMC Sierra is graced with its presence, but according to some sources, this new feature is to come with the upcoming Chevy 1500 and Silverado. Will it be the exact copy? Will it have added features? We can’t be completely sure, but we do know they will be very similar. What is MultiPro?

Ever since the introduction of the pickup truck back in 1925 with the Ford Model T, it has included a tailgate. Apart from changing from wood to metal, there has never really been any changes to the design. It has always been pretty standard, consisting of a latch and possibly a slow falling gate. However, there was clearly room for improvement. In this regard, GMC thought of the brilliant idea of bringing functionality to the tailgate. This makes sense as the standard truck has a lot of real estate that can be used to bring more functionality for the consumer.

When it comes down to its simplest form, the MultiPro Tailgate is a two-part, or two tailgate system. Like every other truck, it has the conventional tailgate that folds down to reveal the bed of the truck. But inside this primary conventional tailgate is another smaller tailgate. Some traditional truck users might say that doing this makes the tailgate less durable or weak. According to GM, however, the tailgate is tried-and-true.

“We exhaustively test every tailgate on our trucks, but we went even further with MultiPro,” stated Derek Patterson, an engineer on the GMC MultiPro design team. “We’ve slammed both tailgate panels tens of thousands of times. We’ve duplicated a variety of real-world scenarios, including carrying cargo in and out of the box, or loading heavy motorcycles on ramps. We’ve cycled through its different configurations in a variety of climates and environments. All told, we wanted MultiPro to be as durable and professional-grade as the Next Generation Sierra itself.”

According to the GMC website, it’s clear that it has some major authority behind it. As we will discuss, the MultiPro has usability written all over it. From the primary gate load stop to a foldable workspace, this tailgate is built for all types of truck users.

Primary Gate

Let’s start with the primary gate. As discussed before, the tailgate is still that, a tailgate. It does have a remote opening and closing feature, using the key fob or the button found in the interior of the truck. The tailgate is easily raised and lowered for a smooth experience — no more worrying about slamming tailgates. With the hands-free feature, you won’t have to worry about people slamming the tailgate shut.

Easy Access

We’ve all experienced it, trying to get something on the far side of the truck bed, yet it’s just out of reach. We jam our waist against the truck in hopes of getting that last inch required, before giving up and jumping onto the bed and grabbing it. With the MultiPro tailgate, the front part of the gate folds down, making it easier to grab the things further away in the bed. The Sierra allows for 7-9” of further reach. Will the Chevy Silverado have the same easy access feature? Only time will tell.

Full-Width Step

While most trucks on the market have a step for easy access to the bed, the MultiPro goes a little further. With both the inner gate and primary gate unlatched, it becomes a full step. The cargo box can be folded out into a hand grab. The Sierra’s MultiPro tailgate is rated at 375 pounds, folding out to a 48” wide step. The dimensions of the Chevy’s tailgate will no doubt be different, but a wanted change for sure!

Inner Gate Load Stop

Why allow plywood or sheetrock take up room in your bed? The inner gate load stop allows you to separate the larger products from the smaller items. While the bed separates different size loads, the top section has its own load stop extending the size of the bed yet again. Truly, innovation at its finest.

Primary Gate Load Stop

This feature is great for hauling those products that are just too long for the bed of the truck. This can be especially useful for contractors hauling plywood, sheetrock, and more. While other trucks do have an optional gate block, typically they are clumsy to use, due to the fact that its separate from the gate, taking up valuable room in the bed. The MultiPro tailgate has a built-in tail block that adds this feature right into the gate, saving room when the gate is closed. Smart!

Inner Gate Work Surface

If you use a truck, then typically, you need a workspace. Construction workers, electrical workers, and many others all need some sort of workspace for easy assembly or dismantle. The MutliPro tailgate has your back with a folding workspace. Simply unfold the top, secondary gate, and you have a legitimate workspace. The Sierra has available electrical outlets to go with the workspace. Seeing as though the Chevy Silverado has outlets in the bed, it can be reasonable to assume the MultiPro on the Chevy trucks will be the same.

MultiPro Tailgate on a Chevy?

As we’ve discussed, this tailgate s unlike any other. With versatile features like the inner gate load stop, improving how the bed is loaded, to safety features like the full-width step and accompanying hand grip, this tailgate can do it all. It also has convenient features like the inner gate work surface, taking the work to a reasonable height, instead of bending down over the bed. There has also been plenty of testing done on the ruggedness of the MultiPro tailgate. This will only improve as time goes by.
