Many pets like a road trip just as must as their humans do, but it is important to make sure they stay safe on the road. In most cases, there is no reason your four-legged family member cannot go out on the road with you. Just make sure to plan ahead. Here are some tips for taking a road trip with your pet.

Use a Carrier

The safest way for your pet to ride in the car is in a crate or a carrier designed for animals. Make sure it is well-ventilated and large enough that your pet can stand up and turn around. Secure the crate in the vehicle so it does not slide around, especially if you must stop quickly or swerve to avoid something. If your pet does not like crates, you can also find a pet harness that attaches to the seat buckle to keep them secure.

Bring Supplies

Just as you have to pack essentials for yourself when you travel, your pet needs things, too. Bring food, leash, and bowl, along with any medication your pet might need. If you have a long road trip planned, bring some of your pet’s favorite toys, blanket, pillow, and bed, so he or she has the comfort of something familiar while away from home. You also want to keep bottled water in the car to provide clean water for your pet. Avoid letting him or her drink water from unfamiliar sources. The water out on the road could have contaminants and make your pet very ill.

Feeding

If you have a dog, do not give him or her a large meal before a long car ride. Feed your dog a smaller meal several hours before you leave. This will allow time for the food to digest and will help your pet from becoming car sick on the road.

Make Frequent Stops

You will most likely have to make more stops on a road trip when traveling with your pet. He or she needs time to go to the bathroom and exercise. When planning the trip, make sure you travel a route that allows you to make stops about every four hours, and look for places that have pet-friendly areas. You can use an app to find dog parks along the way, so your dog can get out, run, and explore. Always clean-up after your pet. By making frequent stops, your trip will be more enjoyable for everyone.

Accommodations

If you need to stop for the night, you can find pet-friendly hotels or accommodations using an app, or you can research this online before you leave. If the hotel you are interested in does not provide information on pets, call ahead to find out what their pet policy is. Some places might have restrictions on breeds or sizes, and quite often, there is an extra charge. If you plan on staying with family or friends, let them know that you will have your pet with you so there is not a surprise when you arrive.
