Local Farms Provide Great Produce

Food is energy, food is life, food is also incredibly delicious, and no one knows food better than Atlanta! There are so many different dishes that are guaranteed to make your taste buds explode in ecstasy and keep you coming back for second helpings, every time. When you’re in Atlanta, there are sights to see and things to do, but sometimes there’s nothing better than a classic home-cooked meal. This is something locals know well, and it helps shine a light on the magic of southern hospitality. These meals are not only packed with flavor; they’re thriving with personality as well.

There is seemingly an endless amount of fun and creative recipes that stem from Georgia, and each one is granted to make your mouth water. These dishes certainly don’t lack in variety, and there are recipes that can be served for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Some of our favorite dishes in Georgia include Brunswick stew, fried green tomatoes, fried okra, and of course, the incredibly savory barbeque that never fails to disappoint. Of course, good meals require good produce, and because of this, Atlanta is home to some very admirable farms that sell locally grown vegetables. You’re going to need to know where to acquire your ingredients for our favorite recipes, and we’re happy to name a couple of farms where a few key ingredients can be found.

One such farm is Patchwork City Farms, located at 902 Pinehurst Terrace SW in Atlanta, and here you can shop for farm-fresh eggs, veggies, and a variety of fruits such as our favorite, strawberries.

For those who are looking for a fresh and healthy treat, visit Lane Southern Orchards located at 50 Lane Road in Fort Valley, Georgia, roughly 1 hour and 30 minutes from Atlanta via I-75N. This is a great spot for families as you can hand-pick blueberries, kiwi, and of course, their peaches they are best known for. This orchard farm, in particular, is the only apple-picking orchard south of Atlanta.

Of course, another way to get many delicious ingredients that you can’t find at a farm is to visit a local grocer. One of our very favorites that we can comfortably rely on for local and organic produce is the Sevananda Natural Foods Market. This local favorite holds an average of 4.7 stars on Google Reviews, with many customers noting the friendly staff and fresh produce. Items you will find here include pasta, olive oil, cereals, soup mixes, sugars, flours, grains, and plenty more. Sevananda Natural Foods Market is located at 467 Moreland Avenue NE in Atlanta, and we highly recommend them when it comes to shopping for some of these ingredients.

When your recipe calls for meats such as pork or chicken, we recommend you look no further than the Big Daddy’s Discount Meats located at 1265 Lee St SW, Atlanta. Here you will find an extensive selection of various fresh meats, including chicken, pork, fish, beef, and steak. They also include a wide selection of grocery items where you will also find seasonings and condiments for the meats you have just purchased. With a helpful and knowledgeable staff at the helm, it’s no wonder why this meat market averages a 4.4-star score on Google.

Now that we know where to find all the ingredients we need, we just have one last thing to do, make some delicious food.

Our Favorite Meal: Brunswick Stew

A pot of Brunswick stew is on a table.

Brunswick Stew is a very popular dish in Georgia because of its smokey flavor, and it can easily be made at home using a handful of ingredients. The whole meal can also be made within an hour, and this recipe can feed up to 8 people.

Ingredients From Patchwork City Farms

  • 3 Cups Diced Potatoes
  • 14 ½ Ounces Diced Tomatoes

Ingredients From Sevananda Natural Foods Market

  • 6 Tablespoons Butter
  • 1 ½ Cups Chopped Onion
  • 3 Cloves of Garlic
  • 1 ½ cups Baby Lima Beans
  • 2 Cups Corn Kernels
  • 3 Cups Chicken Stock
  • 2 Tablespoons Brown Sugar

Ingredients From Big Daddy’s Discount Meats

  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 ½ Cups Barbeque Sauce
  • 2 Cups of Shredded Chicken
  • 2 Cups of Shredded Pork Shoulder
  • 1 Teaspoon Salt
  • ½ Teaspoon Black Pepper
  • ¼ Teaspoon Cayenne Pepper

This Brunswick stew is made with pork and chicken, although it’s not entirely uncommon to see beef being used as a replacement meat. First, what you’re going to want to do in order to get started is to cook up roughly 2 cups of chicken thighs the day before you make the stew, which helps reduce the length of cooking the meal the next day. If you’re not using leftover pulled pork to make this stew, then you can opt for frozen prepared pulled pork instead.

Once the time has come to start your stew, you’re going to want to get a large dutch oven cooking pot and melt six tablespoons of butter over medium heat. The first vegetable you’ll put in there is chopped onions, 1 ½ cups to be exact, and you’re going to want to stir until the onions are soft. Once they are soft, add about three cloves of minced garlic which is roughly one tablespoon, and stir for another 2 minutes before adding the next ingredients.

Next, you’re going to take 3 cups of diced potatoes and 14 ½-ounces of diced tomatoes from Patchwork City Farms and put it into the pot. Take 1 ½ cups of lima beans, 2 cups of corn kernels, and 3 cups of chicken stock that you’ve acquired from Sevananda Natural Foods Market and add it in as well.

Next, wait for all of this to come to a boil and then reduce the heat and cover the top of the pot and let it simmer until all of the vegetables become soft, which should take roughly 25 minutes.

Using the ingredients you’ve found at Big Daddy’s Discount Meats, uncover the pot and add in 1 ½ cups of your favorite barbeque sauce and one tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce. Also, be sure to add one teaspoon of salt along with a ½ teaspoon of black pepper and between ¼ to ½ teaspoons of cayenne pepper. It’s common for a lot of people to add two tablespoons of brown sugar into the mix, but it remains optional for this dish.

Last, add your chicken and pork from Big Daddy’s Discount Meats and let the stew simmer for 15 minutes while remaining uncovered. Once this is all done, you’re ready to serve!

Brunswick stew is easily complemented by foods like cornbread, and many others like to have a cup of coleslaw on the side. Your family and friends are sure to enjoy this stew, and it’ll become a household favorite in no time!

Our Favorite Dessert: Peach Cobbler

Peach cobbler is in a small glass dish.

Peach Cobbler is a staple of Georgia, and because of its sweet taste and fresh ingredients, it’s easy to see why so many locals love it. In fact, Lane Southern Orchards offers its own peach cobbler mix for an easy treat! For those interested in going the extra mile and creating it from scratch, we’ve got just the recipe for you. This recipe, in particular, takes 1 hour to make and can serve four people, and it all starts with the peaches. Thanks in part to orchards such as the aforementioned Lane Southern Orchards, we’re able to secure some fresh and juicy peaches that are locally grown.

Ingredients From Lane Southern Orchards

  • 8 Peaches

Ingredients You’ll Need from “Sevananda Natural Foods Market”

  • ¼ Cup of White Sugar (x2)
  • ¼ Cup of Brown Sugar (x2)
  • ¼ Teaspoon of Ground Cinnamon
  • ⅛ Teaspoon of Ground Nutmeg
  • 1 Teaspoon of Fresh Lemon Juice
  • 2 Teaspoons of Cornstarch
  • 1 Cup of All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 Teaspoon of Baking Powder

Prep time takes about 20 minutes while it takes 40 minutes to cook. Start by preheating your oven to 425º F and proceed to grab a large-sized bowl to begin your mixture. You’re going to grab the 8 peaches that you purchased at Lane Southern Orchards and make sure they’re peeled and pitted before proceeding to slice them into thinly sized wedges. The peaches from this orchard, in particular, are incredibly fresh and will make any cobbler that much tastier.

Put these peaches into the large bowl alongside ¼ cup of white sugar and ¼ cups of brown sugar. Next, take a ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon, cornstarch, lemon juice, and nutmeg from Sevananda and mix them around in the bowl.

Once you have tossed the mixture around enough, grab a 2-quart baking dish and move the contents from the bowl into the dish. After waiting for your oven to preheat, place the baking dish into the oven and keep it in there for 10 minutes while you continue the rest of the prep.

Grab another large bowl and take ¼ cup of brown sugar, ¼ cup of white sugar, salt, baking powder, and flour, which are all obtainable through Sevananda and place it in the bowl.

For the next step, it can be quite handy to have a pastry blender on hand, but if not, you can use your fingertips and get the same end-result. Take six tablespoons of unsalted butter that has been sliced into small pieces and chilled in the fridge and use your fingers to mix the butter into the contents of the bowl and add in ¼ cups of boiling water as you’re mixing. Once 10 minutes have passed, grab the baking dish from the oven and place it down. Spread the mixture over the peaches; it’s recommended to do so with a spoon.

In a small bowl, put one teaspoon of ground cinnamon alongside three tablespoons of white sugar and mix them together. Sprinkle this mixture on top of the peaches and place them back into the oven for roughly 30 minutes, but keep an eye on it as you’ll want to bake it until golden brown. Once you take it out of the oven, let it sit for about 10 minutes before serving and then enjoy with a topping of vanilla ice cream.
