There seems to be a trend with pickup trucks these days. It’s not good enough for the truck to simply be a truck that can get work done. Trucks need to be flashy and decked out with superior trim levels that make heads turn and jaws drop. If this is something that speaks to you, then the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 RST might just be the truck for you.
The Silverado is a legend. On par with the Ford F-150 as the best-selling pickup truck in the entire world, it’s hard to imagine an American street without a Silverado parked in someone's driveway. Over the years, as has been the trend, an increasing number of trim levels have been offered on the Silverado. Some cater to a more luxurious sense of style and travel, while others focus heavily on off-road functions.
The RST sits in between these two preferences, providing just enough exterior styling to be noticed while offering a full string of configurability, engine options, and safety to make it more than the sum of its parts. Apart from being capable, the RST is comfortable, convenient, and the type of truck you won’t mind showing off a little bit. So, we’re here to take you on a tour of the RST and show you exactly why it’s a trim level worth considering.
Starting at
If engine options excite you when you’re on the hunt for a truck, then you really needn’t look further than the RST 1500. With four different engine options to choose from, two standard and two optional, you can outfit your RST with the engine that is going to suit your needs and fuel preferences the best. While the Silverado 1500 does have a 2.7L starting engine for the lower trims, the RST comes standard with the 5.3L V8 and has a couple of other engine options as well.
The standard engine for the RST is the 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 producing 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque and comes with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Maximum towing on this engine is 11,200 lbs, meaning you can tow anything from a camping trailer to 10,000 lbs of hay to a horse trailer. EPA estimated fuel ratings are 16 MPG in the city and 21 MPG on the highway with rear-wheel drive or 15 MPG in the city and 19 MPG on the highway with four-wheel drive.
The two optional engine choices are as follows—a 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 and a 3.0L Duramax diesel I-6. The 6.2L V8 produces 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. Maximum towing on this engine is 13,300 lbs, making it the ideal engine choice for the job site or towing a fifth-wheel trailer. The EPA estimated fuel rating is 15 MPG in the city and 20 MPG on the highway, and it's only available with four-wheel drive.
The final engine option is the 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel generating 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. A powerful engine, the maximum towing capacity is 13,300, so it's on par with the 6.2L in that regard. EPA estimated fuel ratings are 23 MPG in the city and 31 MPG on the highway with rear-wheel drive or 22 MPG in the city and 26 MPG on the highway with four-wheel drive. So, if you’re looking for an RST engine option that will be the most fuel-efficient and simultaneously powerful, you’ll be looking at outfitting your truck with the Duramax Diesel.

As a truck, the RST needs to be configurable to the needs of the driver and adapt to the situations at hand. That’s why Chevrolet has gone out of its way to make sure that the RST has the ability to be configured to meet your needs.
Configurability starts with cab size and bed options. On the RST, you have your option between the Double Cab or Crew Cab. You can get an RST Double Cab with a Regular 6 ft bed or a Short 5 ft bed. You can get an RST Crew Cab with a Regular 6 ft bed or a Short 5 ft bed. You could have bucket seats up front with a central gear shifter or a column-mounted gear shifter and a bench seat. This list could go on and on, but the point is that you can configure your RST to be the RST you want it to be. You can add packages, change bed sizes, even choose between engines. It’s all configurable to your heart's desire as long as it’s a package or engine offered with the RST trim level.
A little side note. The idea of a configurable pickup truck was a fantastical notion not even 50 years ago. Before the 1980s, pickup trucks were considered strictly utilitarian vehicles. Ones that were of use to construction workers or ranchers. Not the average Joe who happens to own a camping trailer. Today, the endless configurability can leave potential buyers feeling overwhelmed. Don’t worry. We can help you plan your perfect RST down to the last detail, so it's perfect for you.
Safety is an enormous factor in car buying today. It’s not enough that the Silverado 1500 RST is a pickup truck. Size no longer means losing out when it comes to passenger safety in the automotive world. That’s why Chevrloet has developed a wide array of safety features that can be added to the RST.
To start, though, we have the standard Chevy Safety Assist. This is standard across all Chevrolet vehicles and includes:
The Safety package, which is an available option for the RST, takes the safety level up to 11. We have:
As you can see, Chevy really gives you everything it can when it comes to making your truck safe.
