No matter what you are looking for in a truck or what you want to use it for, the engine should be one of the first things you look at. Much of your driving experience and what you get from your pickup really depends on the engine. The 2022 Chevy Colorado gives you a tremendous amount of freedom when picking what you want because there are three engines available.
The standard engine on the 2022 Colorado is a 2.5L DOHC I-4 engine that offers 200 hp and 191 lb-ft of torque. This is a great place to start, and it is enough power for a lot of drivers out there. If you want boosted performance, then there is a 3.6L V6 engine available, which delivers 308 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque and comes paired with an 8-speed automatic. This engine is a fantastic choice if you want improved overall power, and this is the greatest amount of horsepower available for the 2022 Colorado.
There is also a third option you can choose: a 2.8L Turbo-Diesel engine that provides you with 181 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. You can see that this is the option with the lowest horsepower, but it has far more torque than either of the other two engines. This torque lets it deliver fantastic towing capability, and it is great for pushing uphill or if you find yourself in many situations where you need to get a lot of work done.
All three of these engines are available with rear-wheel drive standard and four-wheel drive optional. They have great fuel economy across the board, though you will get better gas mileage overall with a two-wheel drive model. The standard engine gets an estimated 19 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, while the V6 upgrade gets a similar 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. Even when you are looking at a midsize truck like the 2022 Chevy Colorado, you want to get a pickup that has enough muscle to handle whatever you need it to. You are not going to find massive towing and payloads with the Colorado like you can a larger truck like the Silverado, but it can still deliver. Some midsize models fall short in this area, but not the Colorado.
The maximum towing capacity of the Chevy Colorado depends on a number of factors, including the size and configuration you choose as well as which engine you pick. Models with the 2.5L standard engine, for example, will typically top out at 3,500 lbs of maximum towing capacity. Choosing the available V6 engine boosts that to 7,000 lbs of maximum towing, while the available diesel engine gets up to a best-in-class 7,700 lbs of towing capacity. As you can see, the difference in the two available engines is not huge, but choosing one of them over the standard engine is a significant increase.
In terms of payload, the configuration and options you choose also play a big role since the overall weight of the truck impacts payload. Most models have at least 1,400 lbs of payload capacity, though some configurations can go as low as 1,380 lbs. The available V6 engine can get you up to 1,550 lbs of maximum payload due to its combination of impressive power and reasonable weight. However, you can see this is not a huge difference, so every Colorado model has a lot to offer when it comes to hauling cargo.
One of the reasons a lot of people choose the Chevy Colorado over other midsize trucks out there is for its amazing off-road capability. This is especially true for the 2022 model, which adds the Trail Boss package as an available option for both the LT and Z71 trims of this truck. That only leaves the Work Truck trim without much in the way of off-road capability, but one of the other trims is going to be a better option for most drivers anyway.
The Trail Boss package that is now available for the LT and Z71 trims has a number of great off-road features starting with a 1-inch factory suspension lift. Since all of these features are directly from Chevy, you do not have to worry about any warranty issues or other problems. The Trail Boss package also includes front and mid-vehicle skid plates, 17-inch wheels from the ZR2, and a locking rear differential. It also eliminates the front air dam to increase the approach angle. Overall, this creates an exciting new pair of options for going off-road with the Colorado.
If you are looking to spend some serious time on the trail, and tackle more difficult routes, then take a look at the legendary ZR2 trim. The ZR2 features a 2-inch factory suspension lift to give you even better clearance than the Trail Boss package, as well as a 3.5-inch-wider track for enhanced stability on the trail. You also get front and rear electronic locking differentials, Multimatic dynamic dampers, and a standard trailering package that includes an integrated trailer brake controller. Altogether, the ZR2 is the ultimate expression of the 2022 Colorado’s off-road potential.
Interior features for the Colorado depend on the trim level and other options you choose, so keep that in mind while checking out what is available.
