Although the Chevy Suburban has always been an impressive, full-size SUV, the latest model is something truly special. The all-new 2021 Chevy Suburban has been updated and improved in a number of significant ways. For one thing, it is larger than before, measuring a bit longer overall, and it has an independent rear suspension for the first time. These two things combine to provide much greater passenger and cargo space inside the new Suburban than ever before.
Three engines will be available for the 2021 Chevy Suburban, including a Duramax diesel engine that will provide tremendous torque for towing or getting uphill. Each engine is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, so no matter which one you choose, you will get a fantastic overall driving experience. The impressive Z71 trim will provide a number of off-road features that will make the 2021 Suburban capable of handling surprisingly well on a trail. And with the impressive towing power that will come with its engines, the Suburban looks to be a dream choice for anyone that loves camping and getting away from the city for a while.
The interior of the 2021 Chevy Suburban has also been updated with better infotainment features than ever before, which will perfectly accompany the boosted interior space. It all just comes together to make the all-new Suburban the most impressive full-size SUV on the road, with amazing features inside and out. While we do not yet know final pricing for the Suburban or its various trim levels, of which there are six, it will likely be pretty close to the current pricing. There will be three engines available for the 2021 Chevy Suburban, giving you a lot of freedom and choice in how you configure your SUV. While some of these details may change before its actual release, we have reliable word about what to expect from these three engines. Just be sure to check back again later for more concrete details as information is released by Chevrolet.
The starting engine on the 2021 Chevy Suburban will most likely be a 5.3L V8 engine that provides up to 355 hp and up to 383 lb-ft of torque for solid overall performance. If you want more power than that, with a traditional gas engine, then there will also be a 6.2L V8 engine available, which will provide up to 420 hp and up to 460 lb-ft of torque for a more responsive and powerful driving experience. Finally, a 3.0L Duramax 6-cylinder diesel engine will be available for the 2021 Suburban, which will likely provide up to 277 hp and up to 460 lb-ft of torque for impressive towing and uphill performance.
All three engines will be paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, so no matter which one you choose, you will get an incredibly smooth driving experience that is remarkably enjoyable. Standard models with any of these engines will have rear-wheel drive, though four-wheel drive is expected to be available for each of them. Details about estimated fuel economy for the Duramax have not yet been released, though we expect that the diesel option will get you the best overall gas mileage. The 5.3L V8 is estimated at 15 city / 22 highway mpg, while the 6.2L V8 is similar at 14 city / 23 highway mpg, with slightly lower numbers expected on 4WD models.
Some of the biggest (literally) improvements to the all-new 2021 Chevy Suburban can be found on the exterior of the vehicle. For starters, it is larger than ever before, starting with a 134-inch wheelbase that is 4 inches longer than the 2020 model, as well as more than an inch of additional overall vehicle length. This larger size – particularly the longer wheelbase – will afford more space inside (but we will get to that elsewhere).
There are also some major upgrades going on with the exterior mechanical systems of the 2021 Chevy Suburban, particularly the suspension. First and foremost, an independent rear suspension will be offered on the Suburban, along with available magnetic ride control, for an incredibly smooth and responsive driving experience. Even better, a segment-first 4-corner air ride adaptive suspension will come later in the lifespan of this new generation of the Suburban, providing even smoother handling and incredible cornering without any loss of performance or its powerful capability.
Six different trims will be available for the 2021 Chevy Suburban, including the off-road focused Z71 trim that a lot of people are excited about. With 20-inch wheels surrounded by all-terrain tires, skid plates on the underside, and a two-speed transfer case for the four-wheel drive system, the Z71 could become the ultimate off-road full-size SUV. It will certainly be an amazing choice for going camping, especially if you have a boat or camper that you need to take with you.
While exterior upgrades coming for the 2021 Chevy Suburban are exciting in their own right, they will also impact the inside of this massive SUV. In particular, the longer wheelbase and increase in overall length for the 2021 Suburban means there will be more room inside for your passengers and cargo than ever before. The Suburban will still be a three-row SUV, but your second and third-row passengers will have more room than they would now. In particular, about 2 inches of additional legroom will be added to each the second and third row to make your passengers much more comfortable.
In terms of cargo space, the larger size of the wheelbase and length of the SUV, combined with independent rear suspension, add much more room for cargo. The rear suspension means the cargo floor is lower than before, which creates nearly 2 cu.ft. of additional cargo space behind the third row. When this is combined with the additional space for second and third-row passengers, you will get a massive increase in overall cargo space. At least one source has told us that the interior cargo space could surpass 144 cu.ft. in total, which would add more than 20 cu.ft. of interior cargo volume to the current model.
The inside of the Suburban has long housed incredible options and available features for a luxurious and sophisticated experience. With the all-new 2021 Chevy Suburban, however, our expectations have been surpassed with what looks to be one of the most impressive and gorgeous full-size SUV interiors anywhere on the road. We still do not even know everything that will be available at the highest trims, but what we have seen so far is exceptional.
Up front, the 2021 Chevy Suburban will have an available 10-inch infotainment display with updated Chevrolet software that supports up to nine camera views for unmatched visibility when towing. A power sliding center console up in the front can automatically slide up to 10 inches, which gives you a great spot for additional storage and concealing valuables from passing eyes. There will also be an available 15-inch color heads up display that will project information onto your windshield, including turn-by-turn directions, safety alerts, and incoming calls, so you can keep your eyes on the road.
In the back, gorgeous interior details and features will keep your passengers comfortable and happy. In particular, the new available Rear Seat Media System will feature a pair of 12-inch displays so that your rear passengers are entertained throughout long road trips (we think you know the kind of rear-seat passengers we are talking about). Numerous charging ports are located throughout the interior of the 2021 Chevy Suburban so your passengers can keep their devices charged, along with an available wireless charging pad in the front.
