For years, large or growing families were limited to minivans clad with wood paneling, powered by sluggish engines, and designed with minimal conveniences or luxuries. Fortunately, the tides have turned, and automakers like Chevrolet and Ford now offer stylish, sophisticated, and capable alternatives like the Suburban and Expedition. Slating the 2022 Chevy Suburban vs 2022 Ford Expedition paints a clearer picture of these alternatives and all the ways Chevy leads the segment.

Promising more power and technology than ever, the Suburban makes a massive splash in Chevy's 2022 lineup. The full-size SUV, which offers seating for up to nine, starts at $52,900 and is an exceptional value.[a] For 2022, Chevy adds new technology like Google Built-In and an industry-leading 13-view camera system. Along with this innovative tech, the Suburban delivers a wide range of power with its three-engine lineup that includes an efficient turbo-diesel responsible for the Suburban's exceptional fuel economy of up to 21 MPG in the city and 27 MPG on the highway.

You won't find a diesel powerplant in the 2022 Expedition's powertrain lineup, nor will you find anything comparable to Chevy's new tech features. The Expedition is priced slightly lower than the Suburban at $52,080, but it's important to remember that you get what you pay for, especially when it comes to a family-friendly SUV. In this case, the Expedition's lower price translates to a limited suite of technology, a smaller cabin with less room for passengers and cargo, and a fuel economy that robs you of more of your hard-earned money than necessary.

    Expedition Interior Space

If you're drawn to the 2022 Expedition for its versatile cabin and functional features, you'll be pleasantly surprised to find that the 2022 Suburban has more to offer. The 2022 Expedition comes standard with a second and third-row bench seat that provides seating for up to seven passengers. Ford gives you the option to upgrade the second row to captain's chairs, reducing passenger capacity to six but making access to the third row easier. With either layout, cargo space is minimal and measures 19.3 cubic feet with both rows in use. With the second and third rows folded flat, the Expedition offers 104.6 cubic feet of space.

While you can pay more for the Expedition MAX and get up to 121.5 cubic feet of cargo space, the Suburban is purposefully designed with you and your passengers in mind. The 2022 Suburban's interior is larger than ever and offers ample room for passengers and cargo. When you opt for the bench seat in the front row, you can comfortably seat up to nine, giving the Suburban another advantage over its rival. So, what about cargo space?

    Suburban Cargo Space and Convenience

Chevy's adjustments to the cabin yield best-in-class maximum cargo volume, easy ingress and egress, and convenient loading and unloading. The Suburban's new independent rear suspension moves the loading floor lower, making it easier to enter and exit the vehicle and load or unload cargo. Cargo space is also plentiful, with the Suburban offering 41.5 cubic feet of room with the second and third rows in use. When all the rear seats are folded flat, you have 144.7 cubic feet of space, which is 40 cubic feet of additional space for groceries, luggage, and other gear that you won't find in the Expedition.

Beyond the Suburban's versatile cabin and best-in-class cargo volume, Chevy also outfits the Suburban with functional features that reduce clutter and add convenience anytime you're on the road. For example, the Suburban features a power sliding center console, a first in the segment. The console makes it easier for your second-row passengers to reach their drinks and other items without having to ask you for help, ultimately stealing your focus from the road ahead and putting everyone's safety at risk. In contrast, the Expedition doesn't offer anything comparable and relies on a stationary center console and standard design features.

  • Safety

    Prioritizing Safety

Ford and Chevy prioritize your safety by equipping models like the 2022 Expedition and the 2022 Suburban with advanced safety and driver-assist tools. These tools increase your focus behind the wheel and actively minimize the potential for collision by alerting you to hazards. In many instances, the Expedition's and Suburban's safety features mirror one another because of safety standards across the industry. There are, however, a few notable differences.

    Chevy vs Ford

The 2022 Expedition's suite of safety features is known as Ford Co-Pilot 360, while the Suburban's suite is Chevy Safety Assist. The Ford Co-Pilot 360 suite offers an array of standard and available safety tools depending on trim. These tools include Active Park Assist 2.0, which makes parking easier, and Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go. In addition, you'll also enjoy tools like Road Edge Detection, Intersection Assist, Reverse Brake Assist, Evasive Steering Assist, Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking, and a Blind Spot Information System with Trailer Coverage.

The 2022 Suburban's Chevy Safety Assist suite is standard across the lineup and equips the SUV with Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Alert, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Front Pedestrian Braking, IntelliBeam automatic high beams, and a Following Distance Indicator. Depending on trim, you'll also find advanced features like Adaptive Cruise Control, an HD Surround Vision Camera that delivers 13 unique camera views, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert.

    Chevy Teen Driver

One feature that distinguishes the Suburban from the Expedition is Chevy's exclusive Teen Driver Technology. The feature is designed to keep you and your family safe, specifically when it's time for your young driver to get behind the wheel. The built-in system equips the Suburban with a virtual driving coach and allows you to set speed alerts, volume limits, and other parameters to promote safe driving habits.

Designed as a hands-on teaching tool, it also features the industry-first Buckle to Drive. The feature is a safeguard that mutes the radio until the driver and passenger buckle their seatbelts. With driving reports delivered after every outing, parents also have more opportunities for teachable moments even when they're not in the car with their teen driver.

  • Technology

    Built for the Future

The 2022 Suburban and the 2022 Expedition are laden with innovative technology that keeps you informed and connected when you're in the driver's seat. Chevy and Ford know that smartphones are an integral part of our daily lives, which is why you'll find seamless smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in both models. Chevy, however, takes this connectivity to the next level and equips the 2022 Suburban with Google built-in. So, what does this mean when you're in the driver's seat?

    Google Built-In

Standard on the Suburban LT and every trim above, Google built-in gives you access to Google Maps, Google Play, and Google Assistant via the Suburban's expansive center touchscreen display. With this level of integration, you can use controls on the steering wheel or simple voice commands to make calls and respond to text messages. You can even control the climate in the cabin, adjust the volume of the radio, change the radio station, and navigate the fastest route using Google Maps.

You won't find Google built-in on the 2022 Expedition and, instead, are limited to Ford's SYNC 4 infotainment system and standard smartphone integration. Ford's SYNC 4 system is impressive in its own right and is also home to the Expedition's navigation system, trailering technology, and a rearview camera. However, the Suburban once again outshines its competitor with a 13-view camera system that delivers exclusive views like Transparent Trailer, Rear Trailer View, and Picture-in-Picture Side View, making it easier than ever to tow heavy loads. In contrast, the Expedition focuses less on camera views and more on trailering technology like Pro Trailer Backup Assist 2.0.
