When it comes down to heavy-duty trucks, we want the most bang for our buck. So when we're looking at one-ton trucks, the model we pick can really make a difference. There are a lot of great trucks out on the market, and there are a lot of not-so-great trucks out on the market. How can we even hope to keep them all straight? Well, we're about to answer that question for you by considering the 2022 Chevy Silverado 3500 HD vs 2022 Ford F-350.
Both pickups are one-ton trucks from manufacturers that have proven to know their stuff when it comes to making incredible trucks. However, that doesn't always mean that winners are put out for drivers, right? So as we look at what makes these trucks the top of their class, keep in mind how what they offer meets your needs. Chevrolet versus Ford is a battle as old as time, but you've come to a Chevrolet dealer, which means that you know the Silverado is the higher quality vehicle. But maybe you need some extra convincing. We get that; after all, you should get the most out of any truck that you purchase.
Overall, the Silverado 3500 HD offers more for less than the F-350. It has better towing and cargo capacity in its base model, has some impressive safety features, and is packed full of convenience features such as the Multi-Flex tailgate. It has better infotainment options in the base models as well. While the F-350 offers an extra option for engine size, it still can't seem to keep up with the Silverado 3500 HD. We know Ford offers some great features, but the Chevy Silverado is still the better option because you get better features and capability for less.
The Chevrolet 2022 Silverado 3500 HD offers two different engine options. You can get the base 6.6-liter V8, which runs on gasoline. This engine puts out an incredible 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque. This means the Silverado is quick and strong. It can get up to speed quickly and has the strength to handle just about anything that gets thrown its way. This option comes with a 6-speed automatic transmission, which is pretty standard for gasoline engines and is a reliable and proven option. You can feel confident that your truck is going to take you where you need to go, get you there quickly, and have the power you need to get the job done. Whether you intend to use your truck for work or for play, you can really count on the Silverado 3500 HD to make that happen. With top-of-the-line suspension and handling, the Silverado is a fun truck to drive.
The 2022 F-350 has a few different engine options available as well. The first is a 6.2-liter V8, labeled the "Boss." This engine has a max capability of 385 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. Which is pretty good––unless you compare it to the Silverado. What does lower horsepower and torque really mean for the Ford, though? In a race, the Silverado would beat the Ford F-350 off the line and down the road because it is quicker to get going and has the power to keep it going faster, longer. This makes the Ford a little less fun to drive and quite a bit slower.
The Ford engine does come with a 6-speed or 10-speed transmission, which is nice of Ford to include that option, but the extra option doesn't increase the base model's power. When it comes to performance, the Chevy Silverado is the clear winner when it comes to base model comparisons. You get more horsepower and more torque for less money, leaving you with a truck that is more capable and more fun to drive.
True to form, the Silverado has an incredible towing capacity, even with its base engine. The 6.6-liter gas V8 is able to handle up to 17,200 pounds of towing. Along with its towing capacity, the gas engine can also handle up to 7,442 pounds of payload in its bed. In layman's terms, you're capable of hauling just about anything that you need to do. That gives you a lot of room for fun and business.
Most people don't typically haul heavy trailers or lots of payload, but if you're using your truck to take you somewhere to play with a fully loaded toy hauler or heading out with a large RV, that sort of capability is required. It also leaves plenty of room for extra accessories or necessities for your next excursion. If you plan to use your truck for work, you can hitch up a flatbed trailer without a problem. So again, your truck has additional wiggle room that leaves you feeling confident that your truck can handle any weight you throw at it.
When it comes to towing capacity, Ford is once again outshone by Chevy. The standard Ford "Boss" engine is able to tow up to 16,700 pounds, and the payload capability is 7,850 pounds. The payload is actually really good, comparatively speaking. However, the towing isn't enough to move the same weight that the gasoline Silverado is capable of. Also, when we haul with our trucks, we usually want more towing capacity than payload weight.
In all, the Ford F-350 with its base engine is less able to handle weight than the Silverado 3500 HD, meaning you might have less confidence in your truck's abilities. This reduced ability to haul gives you less wiggle room when you're towing for work or pleasure purposes. You may not be able to take as many toys out on an adventure, or you may have to make more trips to the worksite instead of just one. The Ford is capable, but not quite as capable as the Silverado when it comes down to towing capacity unless you are willing to spring for the more expensive engine options.
None of the other things we've covered really matter if you don't feel like your truck can keep you safe. But just like in everything else, Rick Hendrick Chevrolet Buford delivers. The 2022 Silverado 3500 HD comes with forward-collision alerts and automatic braking. So your truck can sense if you're getting too close to a vehicle in front of you and it will let you know and then stop itself. It also comes with front pedestrian braking, so same concept but with people instead of cars. The Silverado will also assist you in staying in your lane and it has departure warnings if you're not. It also comes with a following distance indicator. If you're someone who accidentally drives too close to other cars, then your truck will help you stay a safe distance behind the vehicle in front of you.
The Silverado can have Chevy Safety Assist added to it as well. This comes with a large variety of safety features like adaptive cruise control, rear parking assistance, rear and surround camera vision, a rearview mirror camera, lane change alerts, blind-spot alerts, Onstar, and IntelliBeam headlights. You will also get the Teen Driver safety package or add a Safety Seat if you want. All of these features really show how much Chevy cares about its drivers and wants them to be safe on the road. While Chevy can't protect you from everything, it has made an incredible effort to do so.
Ford cares about its drivers' safety as well, so it has put similar safety features in the F-350. Ford calls the features the Ford Co-Pilot360 system, and it includes lane-keeping alerts, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. Ford also includes the standard airbags and a seat belt reminder system that lets you know when you need to buckle up. There are also additional available safety features like Chevy does. Some of these features are adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, parking assistance, and cameras. This is an area where Ford and Chevy are really quite comparable. This is great because we all want to be safe in our vehicles, but Ford doesn't surpass Chevy here either. This means you're spending more money to get the same level of safety features.
