If you want to take a look at two serious workhorses, let’s throw two champions into the ring: the 2022 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD vs 2022 Ram 2500. If you’re looking at a heavy-duty truck, you’re not looking for a facade vehicle that lures you in with shiny features but then sputters around the road, the workspace, or the trail. You’re looking for a serious work machine that will take any job you send its way and will last you for a good long while. We all know that the Silverado is an amazing truck, but Ram can hold its own when it comes to truck production, so this will be an entertaining competition.
When looking for a workhorse like either one of these trucks, there are three specific factors that need to be considered: performance, capacity, and technology. Good technology can make your job significantly easier, and if the vehicle is lacking in the necessary technology, you will notice, so don’t knock this one off as insignificant. Luckily, there is plenty of that available in the 2022 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD, but can the 2022 Ram 2500 keep up?
Performance is the keyword when it comes to heavy-duty trucks. The 2022 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD and the 2022 Ram 2500 both know this very well, so let’s take a look at what they offer you.
The 2022 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD offers you two different engines. First is the 6.6-liter V8 gas engine. This engine, which is paired with 6-speed automatic transmission, provides you with 401 horsepower, 464 pound-feet of torque, and a maximum towing capacity of 17,370 pounds. That’s pretty good. The second option is the Duramax 6.6-liter Turbo-Diesel V8 engine. Paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, the Duramax offers 445 horsepower, 910 pound-feet of torque, and a maximum towing capacity of 18,510 pounds. Is there even a question?
Never underestimate the power of Diesel. The Duramax engine excels on all fronts, and if you’re looking to work hard (and play hard once you’re done), the engine chooses itself for you. Aside from the increase in performance specs, Diesel will offer the potential to lower your gas expenses over time, as you’ll be getting more power per mile.
The Ram 2500 also offers two engines, though the choice between the two is not quite as cut-and-dry as the Silverado 2500 HD. The 6.4-liter Hemi V8 engine, paired with 8-speed automatic transmission, provides the truck with 410 horsepower, 429 pound-feet of torque, and a maximum towing capacity of 17,540 pounds. Not bad, but not quite at the Silverado HD level yet.
The available 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel I6 engine, which is paired with 6-speed automatic transmission, allows the Ram 2500 to perform at 370 horsepower, 850 pound-feet of torque, and gives it a maximum towing capacity of 20,000 pounds. We do have to say that while the Ram has less horsepower and torque, it does beat out the Silverado for towing capability in raw numbers. However, that's not all there is to towing.
There’s a reason you’re looking at a heavy-duty truck, and the reason is in the name of the vehicle: you need something heavy-duty, which includes high-performance specs. While the Ram 2500 offers high-performance specs, you want to go for the highest, and that is why the Silverado 2500 HD is the winner of the performance sector.
Most of your workloads will be just that: a load. You need a vehicle that can load up and get the job done, whether that’s on the pickup bed itself or hitched on as a trailer. The 2022 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD and the 2022 Ram 2500 both offer competitive payload capacities, but one will exceed the other.
Now, we’ve already touched on the towing capacity specs in the performance section, but here are some fast facts before we get into the nitty-gritty of these two vehicles and their payload capacities. The 2022 Silverado 2500 HD has a maximum payload of 3,979 pounds and a maximum towing capacity of 18,510 pounds. The 2022 Ram 2500 has a maximum payload of 4,010 pounds and a maximum towing capacity of 20,00 pounds. But, numbers are not everything, so it is important to take a closer look at how this plays out in the actual cargo-bearing experience.
The Silverado 2500 HD offers the Silverado’s acclaimed Multi-Flex Tailgate, which provides extreme flexibility by way of six dynamic functions. This tailgate is able to provide two different load stops, a work surface, and a step, as well as craft itself into other helpful configurations to make sure that your cargo is easily accessible when using the cargo bed. Once you’ve passed through the tailgate, the Durabed offers an impressive cargo volume of up to 83.5 cubic feet with the long bed. Not only is the cargo volume spacious, but the bed also provides twelve tie-downs and a 120-volt electrical outlet. So, you’ll have everything you need to work. And LED lighting will make sure that you are able to see what you’re working on, no matter what time of day or night!
While the Ram 2500 offers a kick-out bed step making for easier access to the power-releasable dampened tailgate, that is about as far as it goes. It does not offer the same flexibility as the Silverado’s Multi-Flex Tailgate, meaning that the actual act of cargo-bearing is much easier with the 2022 Silverado 2500 HD. While the bed also offers an outlet and LED lighting, its cargo volume maxes out at 74.7 cubic feet. Your cargo bed experience will simply be stronger with the Silverado 2500 HD.
Big numbers are great, and they are indicative of a vehicle’s performance ability, but they do not tell the whole story. It is important to understand the realistic experience of working with a given truck, and the Silverado 2500 HD provides a realistically better experience.
Technology makes a big difference in your towing experience. While trailering oftentimes becomes a hassle, it does not need to be. That is why it is important to seek out a vehicle with the right towing technology, which alleviates the stress and helps you get the job done without any problems. Both the 2022 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD and the 2022 Ram 2500 offer unique towing technologies, but one does excel above the other.
The Chevy Silverado 2500 HD offers Chevy’s truly excellent towing technology, thanks to the technicians over at GM. There is so much to be said about the Silverado’s advanced towing capabilities and technology that we will only be able to scratch the surface here. But, we’ll narrow our focus to a specific area of this technology: the camera views.
With up to fifteen available camera views, you’ll be able to have eyes all over your trailer. These camera views are split up into three categories: four hitch views, six driving views, and five parking views. Notably among these camera views is the surround view, which falls under the hitch view category. This dynamic view will show you what’s behind your vehicle as well as an aerial view of your vehicle so that you can get the full picture of your surroundings.
One other camera view which is particularly unique is the available Inside Trailer View, which allows you to see inside your trailer and keep an eye on your cargo. A view that really breaks the mold is the Rear Camera Mirror, which utilizes a screen in the vehicle’s rear-view mirror to show what you would usually see in the rear-view mirror (behind your trailer). So much of the trailering experience is knowing your surroundings, avoiding obstacles, and taking care of the cargo. These camera views assist in doing all of those things, and your trailering experience will be easier than ever.
In terms of the Ram’s towing technology, the vehicle offers a Trailer 360-degree Surround View Camera and a digital rear-view mirror (like the Rear Camera Mirror in the Silverado HD). While these are both helpful features, the camera technology simply does not reach that of the Silverado 2500 HD.
Whether you’re towing for work or for play, it is important that you do it well. It’s not just your safety and the safety of your cargo; it’s the safety of other drivers on the road. The 2022 Silverado 2500 HD is well-equipped to carry out difficult towing jobs, thanks to Chevy’s leading towing technology.
