Let’s be honest. Nothing beats having a cool truck to roam around in. You can go practically anywhere, and even a light-duty model will turn heads. So, if you are searching for the perfect pickup truck to satisfy the adventurer within, you should compare the 2020 Chevy Silverado vs 2020 Toyota Tundra.
While these two vehicles may share a class, they don’t have much in common. Aside from the fact that both can seat up to six passengers depending on the cab style, they are vastly different from one another. First, the Chevy Silverado is an American-made truck that has cultivated a long-standing reputation for being reliable and tough. On the other hand, the Japanese automaker, Toyota, has generally been highly-regarded for its smaller vehicles as opposed to larger ones like the Tundra.
Let’s take a moment to compare the performance specs, interior features, and exterior styling elements of both trucks to see which one best suits your specific needs.
One of the first things people ask about on trucks is its performance. The 2020 Chevy Silverado does not disappoint. It comes with five powertrain options depending on which trim you decide to go with. First is a turbocharged 2.7L engine that produces 310 hp and 348 lb-ft of torque. This motor is equipped with LT and RST models, and it comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission with start-stop technology for better fuel economy. This powertrain gets about 20 mpg combined (19 city/22 highway), and it can manage to tow up to 7,000 pounds without breaking a sweat.
On the Work Truck, Custom, and Custom Trail Boss model is a robust 4.3L V6 engine. Paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, this powertrain generates 285 hp and 305 lb-ft of torque and has a fuel economy set at 18 mpg combined (16 city/21 highway). Yes, it’s lower than the first powertrain, but you can haul up to 7,900 pounds.
Then, we have the magnanimous 5.3L V8 engine that pushes out 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. It is coupled with either a 6 or 8-speed automatic transmission and can pull up to 10,100 pounds. This incredibly powerful combination only gets about 17 mpg combined (15 city/19 highway). The turbodiesel option is a 3.0L I-6 engine that pumps out 277 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. Mated with a 10-speed automatic transmission and start-stop technology, this powertrain has an exceptional fuel economy of 27 mpg combined (23 city/33highway).
Lastly, the LTZ and High Country versions feature a massive 6.2L V8 engine paired with a 10-speed automatic. Generating a staggering 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, this model tows 13,400 pounds and has a fuel economy set at 18 mpg combined (16 city/20 highway).
On the flip side, the 2020 Toyota Tundra only comes with a single powertrain. Before you get too disappointed, this powertrain is well-rounded and capable. However, many people want a customizable truck that can be ramped up to suit their specific needs. The Tundra does not deliver on this point. Under the hood rests a 5.7L i-Force V8 engine that produces 381 hp and 401 lb-ft of torque. With a 6-speed automatic transmission, it can tow up to 10,200 pounds, which is significantly less than the Silverado V8 option. The fuel economy also leaves something to be desired, sitting at only 15 mpg combined (13 city/18 highway).
Now it’s time to slip behind the wheel of the 2020 Chevy Silverado. Your experience at this point will depend on the trim level you choose. There are eight. Some are made for work crews, and others are dripping with elegance and sophistication. Let’s take a closer look inside each one!
First, we have the WorkTruck model that features easy-to-clean vinyl upholstery and rubber flooring. If you track mud inside, you can simply hose it out. No problem! As for entertainment, it is well-equipped with the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 System. Displayed on a 7-inch touchscreen, this system operates with Bluetooth, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. This makes it easy to take calls hands-free and listen to your personalized playlist.
The Custom model upgrades the stereo from 2-speakers to 6-speakers, and it also features a 60/40 split-folding rear bench seat. Then we have the off-roading trim called the Custom Trail Boss. It features a 2-inch suspension lift for going over rocks and rough terrain with ease. Want to stay connected to your favorite apps?
If you answered yes, then you should consider the LT trim. It has its own 4G LTE Wifi hotspot. It also comes with cloth upholstery. Stepping up into a more luxurious realm is the LT Trail Boss model. It offers all-weather floor mats and leather-wrapping on the steering wheel. Then we have the RST version, which comes with keyless open and remote start technology. For even more luxury, the LTZ gets perforated leather upholstery and a larger 8-inch touchscreen. This upgraded infotainment system operates with voice-recognition for enhanced user experience. Finally, the top-tier High Country model gets an updated 7-speaker Bose stereo with an added subwoofer.
Coming up short again, the 2020 Toyota Tundra is only available in 6 trims. So, as we saw with the powertrain, we have a lack of customization again.
The base trim is known as the SR, and it comes with vinyl upholstery like the Silverado WorkTruck. This makes it easy to clean spills or mud. It also features a comparable infotainment interface displayed on a 7-inch touchscreen. Like the Silverado, it operates with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well. Here’s where things get a little different on the base level. The SR comes standard with a 6-speaker stereo and multiple safety features. These include automatic high beams, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and emergency braking.
When we move up to the SR5, we get bucket seats, a larger 8-inch touchscreen, and a height-adjustable tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. As for luxury, you will need to step up to the Limited version. This includes a navigation system, dual-zone climate control, and leather upholstery. If you don’t want ice cold seats in the winter and scalding hot seats in the summer, you should spring for the Platinum model. This sophisticated version adds heated and cooling to the leather seats for comfort. It also comes with an upgraded 12-speaker JBL stereo system for an enhanced music-listening experience.
Next is the 1794 Edition. This one features elegant touches throughout the cabin, including a wood grain gear shift knob and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Lastly, the off-roading model is known as the TRD Pro. It offers aluminum Fox shocks and a revised suspension for better handling over rough terrain. However, nothing the Tundra offers matches the off-roading ability the Chevy provides its drivers.
Many different exterior styling elements between these two pickup trucks vary depending on the trim. Wheels, accents, and side mirrors are just a few.
Let’s talk about body styles for a brief moment. The 2020 Chevy Silverado bed is constructed out of roll-formed high-strength steel and offers a 3X more tie-downs than competitors. In total, it has 12 tie-downs in the back. Configurations for this truck include Regular Cab (8.1-ft bed), Double Cab (6.6-ft bed), and Crew Cab (5.8 or 6.6-ft bed). As for the Toyota Tundra, its bed features a few tie-down cleats within a deck rail system. It is only available in two body styles, including the Double Cab (6.5 or 8.5-ft bed) and the CrewMax (5.5-ft bed).
Finally, the Silverado comes in 10 unique paint colors, including Summit White, Black, Shadow Gray Metallic, Satin Steel Metallic, Northsky Blue Metallic, Silver Ice Metallic, Havana Brown Metallic, Iridescent Pearl Tricoat, Cajun Red Tintcoat, and Red Hot. The Tundra finally surpasses the Silverado in one category by offering an extra paint option. Totally eleven shades, it is available in Super White, Cement, Midnight Black Metallic, Smoked Mesquite (brown), Quicksand (tan), Magnetic Gray Metallic, Silver Sky Metallic, Cavalry Blue, Army Green, Barcelona Red Metallic, and Voodoo Blue.
