If you are looking to get the most out of your pickup truck, you should consider getting one with a diesel engine. Pound for pound, diesel trucks provide more torque than those with conventional gas engines, translating into more towing power. However, on the whole, choosing a truck with a diesel engine will cost you more than if you choose to buy one that is gas-powered. This is why looking for used diesel trucks for sale is often the best option for those looking for a true workhorse ready to tackle any challenge. Buying a used diesel truck is a great way to get one of these amazing vehicles, as it will cost you significantly less money than if you bought one new.
At Rick Hendrick Chevrolet of Buford, we have a large inventory of used diesel trucks, which means you can get behind the wheel of one of these vehicles at an affordable price. It also means you can find one with the size, design, and features you're looking for to customize your truck even more. Just like trucks with conventional gas engines, used diesel trucks come in all sizes, including midsize, full-size, and heavy-duty.
In addition, they have cab designs from two-door regular cabs with one row of seats to four-door crew cabs with room for up to six passengers. What’s more, most automakers offer diesel engines on most trim levels of their popular trucks, so you can choose the features you want in your truck. Finally, you can find used diesel trucks at our dealership with four-wheel drive for better traction and rear-wheel drive for maximum towing and hauling capability.
Diesel trucks provide more benefits than their gas-powered counterparts. First, choosing a diesel truck will often result in better towing capability, which is demonstrated when you look at a particular model pickup truck and compare engine choices. For example, if you look at the 2020 Ford F-150 with a 3.0-liter Power Stroke Turbo Diesel V6, you’ll see that it produces 250 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque. The 2.7-liter EcoBoost Turbo V6 on the same truck will deliver 325 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. As a result of this difference in output, the diesel F-150 can tow up to 11,500 lbs, while the F-150 with the 2.7-liter V6 tops out at 9,000 lbs. The same can be seen with the 2020 Chevy Colorado. This midsize truck can tow up to 7,700 lbs with the available 2.8-liter Duramax Turbo-Diesel I-4, whereas the same truck with the standard 2.5-liter I-4 gas engine can only tow up to 3,500 lbs.
Diesel fuel is also more efficient than gasoline. On the whole, trucks running on diesel fuel will give you 29% more fuel efficiency on the highway than the same trucks with gas engines. It drops slightly to 24% more fuel efficiency in city driving, but this can still yield significant savings. This is probably why you see so many diesel truck models with combined fuel economy numbers in the mid-20s, while conventional gas-powered trucks are usually around 20 MPG. While diesel fuel costs more per gallon than unleaded gasoline in general, this price differential is more than made up for by the better fuel economy ratings enjoyed by diesel trucks.
A final reason to choose a diesel truck is that they are longer lasting than the same truck models with conventional gasoline engines due to fewer moving parts than gas engines. In addition, diesel engines use more extreme compression than spark plugs in gas engines that create internal combustion. The constant sparking puts wear and tear on gas engines that are not experienced by diesel engines. Also, diesel fuel acts as a natural lubricant for the engine parts, like having additional engine oil coursing through your truck’s powertrain.
As a result, it is not unusual to see diesel trucks still running with 200,000 miles on the odometer, often more than double the life expectancy of trucks with gas engines. For you, this means you can drive your truck longer while, on average, needing fewer repairs to your truck’s powertrain. Keep in mind that the powertrain is often the most expensive feature to repair on any vehicle.
While we are an authorized Chevy dealership, Rick Hendrick Chevrolet of Buford is proud to offer used diesel trucks from an array of great brands available today. All you have to do is determine which size truck you need and the features you desire, and then you can choose between the extensive selection of excellent used diesel trucks we have in our inventory. Our full-size diesel trucks are perhaps our most versatile, and you'll find an abundance of them on our lot in a vast selection of model years and trims.
The Chevy Silverado 1500 is a wonderful truck with many great features, including an available 3.0-liter Duramax Turbo Diesel I-6 engine. This has been available on the Silverado 1500 since the 2020 model year and is also the same engine that is available on used GMC Sierra 1500 models, which started offering the diesel option during the 2019 model year. You can also find used Ford F-150 and Ram 1500 diesel truck models as well. Interestingly enough, these automakers also use a 3.0-liter Turbo Diesel engine on their full-size trucks, although these have a V6 design instead of the I-6 used on the General Motors trucks.
If you want to get the maximum towing capability out of your used diesel truck, then you should choose one that has a heavy-duty design. Fortunately, the major automakers have been offering their heavy-duty trucks with an optional diesel engine, so you should have little trouble finding one used at our dealership. The Chevy Silverado Heavy Duty models are the 2500HD and 3500HD. These have used a 6.6-liter Turbo Diesel V8 in recent years, the same as the GMC Sierra Heavy Duty 2500HD and 3500HD.
The Ford Super Duty models use a slightly larger 6.7-liter Turbo Diesel V8 engine, while the Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks feature a 6.7-liter Turbo Diesel I-6 engine. Whichever model of used heavy-duty diesel truck you choose, you will be able to get exceptional towing capability out of your pickup. For those who prefer a midsize truck, both Chevy and GMC have been offering their models with an available 2.8-liter Duramax Turbo Diesel I-4 since 2016. This means that you can find a used Chevy Colorado or GMC Canyon with a diesel engine at our dealership, giving you exceptional fuel economy and amazing durability in a midsize truck with the capability of a larger vehicle.
