Need a Place to Walk Your Furry Friend?

June 2nd, 2016 by

The area of north Georgia near Buford is replete with parks, neighborhoods, and hiking trails that not only extend a friendly greeting to visitors, but also to their furry friends. For many dog owners, a walk just isn’t the same without a canine companion, while for others, the sense of security imparted by having a dog as a travelling partner inspires them to turn a walk into an adventure.

Chattahoochee River National Recreation

The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area provides ample recreational opportunities for you and your dog. A network of trails is easily accessible at a number of points in the Atlanta metropolitan area, with clearly marked signage and sufficient parking to ensure easy access. Dogs on a leash are welcome at the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, and the river is dotted with shallow pools and swimming holes that are great places to let your pooch cool down, wade, and even go for a swim.  For dogs that are new to the water, the numerous sandy shallows offer an excellent place to let them get their paws wet for the first time in a wild setting. A variety of trees and vegetation offer shade along the main trails, keeping dogs cool in the hot summer months.

Trolley Line Trail

The Atlanta area was once crisscrossed with trolley lines, bringing in commuters from outlying elegant neighborhoods to the city center beginning in the late 19th century. Non-profit partnerships breathe new life into the old railways, repurposing them for recreational purposes, such as cycling and hiking. Bring your leashed dog to the Trolley Line Trail, which runs from the University area of downtown Atlanta, through the city, and onward to outlying neighborhoods such as East Lake, Cabbagetown, and Reynoldstown. Keep your pet close, as sections of the trail are adjacent to busy roads.

Lewis and Sweat Mountain Dog Parks

Nearby, Marietta, Georgia, is home to two dog parks that provide everything you need to enjoy a walk with your dog in an off-leash environment. Lewis Dog Park offers an expanse of grass for your dog to explore. Shaded picnic tables are available when you require a break. Separate areas for small and large dogs ensure all the dogs play fairly. Sweat Mountain Dog Park offers a wooded locale for a walk with your furry friend. Squirrels are a common sight at this park, giving dogs the added excitement of a chase.  An onsite water fountain for dogs allows you to leave the water bowl at home, while clean-up stations ensure the premises are kept in good order.

Brook Run Off-Leash Dog Park

Dunwoody, Georgia is home to Brook Run Off-Leash Dog Park, which boasts a looping walking trail that runs through acres of wood and fields. This park is fully fenced and well maintained by dedicated volunteers. A fence runs the entirety of its 4 acres, so there is no danger of your dog going on a walk of its own.

Next time the weather is nice, bring your furry pal with you to enjoy the sunshine and fresh air.
