5 Totally Free Things to Do in Atlanta, GA
If you’re looking for a fun-filled day to spend in Atlanta, but don’t want to spend your hard-earned money, there are tons of totally free activities throughout the city. Each of these activities provide a unique experience that even cheap or expensive attractions can’t match. Here are just a few ideas to get you started.
Atlanta BeltLine Tours
One of the best ways to truly see Atlanta is by hopping on one of their BeltLine tours. Whether you want to explore by bus, on foot, or on a bicycle, this free activity is sure to please. In case you didn’t know, the BeltLine is a former railway corridor throughout downtown that’s been transformed into a multi-use trail. Along the way, you’ll get to see some Atlanta’s historic buildings, as well as natural beauty. Remember that most tours only run on weekends.
Centennial Olympic Park
Built for the 1996 Summer Olympic Games, Centennial Olympic Park is a beautiful urban landscape that’s perfect for relaxing and admiring the scenery. Children will love the Fountain of Rings, especially as they frolic about on a hot summer day. Throughout the year, the park is home to several events such as the Purina Dog Challenge and the Georgia Marathon. If you feel like dropping a few dollars on lunch, head over to Googie Burger for the epic combination of burger and fries.
Yoga in the Park
Twice a month from March to September, you can leave the workaday world behind and get some much-needed meditation at Yoga in the Park. These meetings take place at Tanyard Creek Park, which is a scenic one-mile stretch along the Atlanta BeltLine. It’s completely free of charge, although donations and tips for the instructors are much appreciated. So, grab your yoga mat and put on your stretchy pants as you bathe in the sun and free your mind and body.
Disc Golf
In southwest Atlanta, you’ll find Perkerson Park, a beautiful 50-acre outdoor playground. It’s on these grounds that you can test your frisbee throwing skills on their 18-hole disc golf course. All you need is a frisbee, a few friends or family members, and a willingness to try. If you want the true experience, you probably need a set of discs, as each is specially designed for your drive or short game. Just remember not to go all Happy Gilmore if you aren’t the best shot.
Georgia Capitol Museum and Tour
Whether you’re interested in politics or history, the Georgia Capitol Museum and Tour is the best way to learn about some of Georgia’s past. You can choose either a guided or self-guided tour, and each gives you great insight into former leaders that influenced present-day Georgia. Once you’ve gathered all the information you can handle, check out the museum which showcases art collections and other exhibitions throughout the year.
Finding something free to do in Atlanta isn’t difficult, you just have to know where to look. No matter what your interests, you’re sure to find something that’s right up your alley.
