4 Best Georgia State Parks to Visit This Fall

Contrary to popular belief, fall in Georgia can bring about pleasant temperatures and beautiful sights for the entire family to enjoy. If you are looking for something to do this fall, check out these four breathtaking state parks, all found right here in the state of Georgia and conveniently located near the Atlanta area.

Amicalola Falls

Travel on Highway 52, go 15 miles north of Dawsonville

Amicalola Falls State Park is famously known for its gorgeous waterfall that cascades down 729 feet of stunning southern landscape. During autumn, the beauty of this view is magnified as the surrounding trees change into magnificent oranges and yellows.

Though the hike to the falls can be strenuous for some, the view is well worth the effort. If hiking isn’t your thing, there are also fantastic picnicking areas, trout fishing, and even geocaching to be enjoyed at this 829-acre park.

Fort Yargo

Travel on Highway 81, go one mile south of Winder

Northeast of Atlanta, you will find Fort Yargo State Park, located near Winder. This park is best known for its 260-acre lake that rests in the center of the 1,816-acre stretch of land, which changes to brilliant, warm hues in the fall.

Here, you can kayak, fish, paddle board, pedalboard, and so much more, and most of the boats and supplies are available for rent. There are also dryer activities you can participate in, such as mini golf, tennis, and basketball. If you and your loved ones are looking to spend some time outdoors in the cool and forgiving fall weather, Fort Yargo is the place to be.

High Falls

Travel on Interstate Highway 75, take exit 198 and go 1.8 miles

South of Atlanta, in Jackson, GA, is High Falls State Park, a 1,050-acre park that features a 650-acre lake and educational, historical structure remains. By hiking the trails and exploring the land, you and your family can observe the massive remains of a hydroelectric power plant foundation. Oddly enough, the ruins of this building, combined with the water and the changing colors of leaves, paint an absolutely beautiful picture in the fall.

You can find all of your favorite outdoor and camping activities at High Falls, including the option for renting a yurt. If you plan on having a large family reunion or similar event in the area this fall, this state park can provide you the ideal spot.

F.D. Roosevelt

Travel on I-185, go south of Pine Mountain, HWY 27

With just more than 9,000 acres, F.D. Roosevelt State Park, located southwest of Atlanta, is Georgia’s largest state park. There are 40 miles of trails that wind through the breathtaking Pine Mountain region. You are sure to catch unbelievable glimpses of the fall scenery, as these trails all have convenient outlooks that peer over the mountaintops.

There are over 100 campsites you and your family can choose from when visiting FDR State Park. In addition to fishing, boating and viewing the nature, you can also partake in one of the many events that are scheduled around the area this fall.
