Crossover SUVs don’t have to cost a fortune, and this is something that Chevy took upon itself to prove. The result was something truly incredible, and this year’s 2022 Chevy Trax is what you get after years of improvements to help make this fantastic automobile even more appealing to the masses. This year’s model doesn't have a lot of huge upgrades from last year's model, but there is still a lot to get excited about. What this does mean, however, is that those who are either first-time shoppers or drivers seeking to upgrade from their older Trax model from years past should pay close attention this year.
Also, like years past, the 2022 Trax is equally as value-packed as its predecessors, starting at only $21,400* for the base model. For a vehicle with such a lower asking price against its competitors, Chevy has also managed to include some of the most sought-after features in the market today. This only makes the mass appeal of this vehicle stronger than ever.
There are only two trim levels for the Trax, and both of them are marketed as value-friendly compact SUVs. The base level is the LS, and when it comes to the average shopper, this is an excellent choice for its large amounts of standard features that range from tech and performance to safety features. If the idea of getting even more amenities sounds pleasing, then the LT is also a fantastic choice with additions over the base model that includes cruise control and optional leatherette seats with a 6-way power-adjustable driver’s chair. Best of all, this trim includes a roof rack with side rails, which makes this model perfect for bringing along a cargo bag, bikes, and more to a campsite.
The 2022 Trax performs with ample power, and it does so with a small carbon footprint. This is achieved by utilizing a turbocharged 1.4L 4-cylinder engine paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Typically, an engine this size wouldn’t be anything special, but since it’s turbocharged, Chevy has been able to squeeze a decent amount of performance out of it. This engine comes with every Trax model, and these models will generate 155 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque.
Both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are available to Trax drivers, and the main deviation this will show on the spec sheet is in regards to fuel efficiency. For everyday travel, there’s not much reason to opt for something considerably more powerful unless you require that performance increase for something specific.
Models that are equipped with the front-wheel drive configuration will net you more efficiency than those with all-wheel drive. For example, front-wheel drive models get EPA-estimated ratings of 24 MPG in the city and 32 MPG on the highway, while all-wheel drive models will net slightly lesser ratings of 23 MPG in the city and 30 MPG on the highway. All-wheel drive models have their advantages, especially when driving on wet roads, and the slight reduction in fuel efficiency isn’t enough for us to hold back a recommendation from these models.
The interiors inside of the best modern-day compact SUVs feature both copious amounts of space and an assortment of modernized tech features. The 2022 Chevy Trax impresses in both of these regards. Inside of the 2022 Trax, five passengers can fit inside of the cabin, with the front row offering the driver and passenger with 39.6-inches of headroom and 40.8-inches of legroom. In the back, passengers will have a generous 38.8-inches of headroom and 35.7-inches of legroom, and folding back this row of seats will more than double your available cargo space.
The Trax offers 18.7 cu.ft. of cargo space when the backseats remain upright, but this is still enough space for completing daily tasks like grocery shopping and can even hold lighter amounts of cargo when bringing the family on vacation. When you need the extra space, folding down these rear seats will reveal 48.4 cu.ft. of space, which is a massive 158.8% increase.
Various tech features have become popular in modern vehicles, and SUVs are no exception. Every year, more customers become aware of the latest tech, and when shopping for a vehicle, the latest tech is more of a must-have than a want for most drivers. Chevy has gone above and beyond at securing a tremendous amount of tech features for the Trax, and best of all, most of them are standard. Starting with the main attraction, the 2022 Trax includes a Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system that comes with every model. This media center is the central hub of your connectivity and entertainment when on the road, and it’s all housed within a 7-inch touch screen.
With your infotainment center, this is where you’ll change radio stations and connect your wireless devices to Bluetooth for music playback with no wires. What you will need a wire for, however, is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, in which the Trax has both. All you’ll need is a compatible smartphone and a USB cable, and you’re good to go. By utilizing an iPhone, for example, the infotainment center becomes easier to understand because it’ll look more like your phone.
Accompanying your infotainment center is a set of apps that have been designed specifically for features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. These separate apps give you access to new maps, podcasts, calendars, and much more. This is without mentioning that you’ll have full access to your contacts list, and through this, you can send text messages by speaking, or you can make a phone call with the end user’s voice coming through your vehicle’s speakers, in which there are six for the 2022 Trax. Additionally, there’s an available 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, and this allows for a seamless internet connection that you and your passengers can always utilize. This greatly enhances the Trax for long road trips and will also help it remain relevant as more technology becomes wireless.
Safety is important for any vehicle, but for an SUV, it’s vital as they’re marketed towards families. The Trax uses a couple of noteworthy safety features that come standard, and the others can be added at an additional fee. Coming standard with the 2022 Trax is a Rear Vision Camera that will give you a video feed from the bumper of your vehicle. This camera will display its video on your vehicle’s infotainment center and is immensely helpful when it comes to reversing your Trax. Those who want extra clarity can opt for a High Definition camera instead. The next notable standard safety feature is the inclusion of 10 airbags, which means you’ll be extra safe from potentially life-threatening accidents.
It doesn’t end there as the optional safety features previously mentioned are highly useful for daily travel. When you opt for the Driver Confidence Package, available on the LT trim, you will get an additional three safety features that are extremely helpful for commuting.
The first feature is the Side Blind Zone Alert. This feature will let you know when a vehicle has entered into one of your side blind spots, meaning you can have more confidence when changing lanes. Next up, you will get the Rear Cross Traffic Alert. This feature lets you know when a vehicle is crossing your intended path when you are backing up. This is one of the most useful features to have when you are in a busy parking lot. Finally, you will get the Rear Park Assist that will alert you when there is an object that you might not be able to see behind your car when it is in reverse.
